Paying It Forward
Share March 26, 2005 | Health & Lifestyle, Zen Musings
So, yesterday I was at Borders Books & Music and I ordered a couple of decaffeinated beverages from the Café. I didn’t have any cash with me so I used my shiny, brand new debit card. The barrista made the drinks first and when it was time to pay up, my debit card didn’t work! It was sooooooo embarrassing.
Anyway, the barrista was nice and said, “no problem, just get in touch with your bank to get it fixed”. So I tried calling my bank and for some odd reason my cellphone couldn’t connect. Luckily, my bank was 10 minutes away and so I went there and they manually set a new password and made sure it was activated.
I went back to Borders and told the barrista my new card was working now. But she told me that a lady who was waiting in line behind me (when I first ordered my drinks) had paid for them!
The barrista told me that the lady just said, “just tell him to do something nice for someone else one day”.
I thought that was one of the nicest things anyone had ever done for me… and especially coming from a complete stranger, and I was thinking about that movie, Pay It Forward. So now I just need to pay it forward and help someone else in need.
Have I done that yet?
Well, since then I have helped various people. From donating to my favorite charities to giving money to homeless people on the street. Nowadays, I do what I can and try to find the compassion and kindness to give to others who might need my help.
Whenever you can, why not help others by paying it forward.
