Easter Sunday

listening to: a lot of keith jarrett lately

Easter Sunday was alright, but sometimes family get-togethers simply feel like… family obligations. Also, I didn’t have a very good yoga routine because I was rushed and we had to do a lot of things. I had a better day on Saturday.

For one, I had an excellent yoga routine. Which means in reality that although I really can not get into all the classic poses fully, it felt very good, very relaxed. And it carried later on into my gig at The Bistro.

There was an old man at The Bistro who sat right in front of us. We were talking about the music and how he was glad that we played the music he liked… the old standards and jazz tunes.

When we started, Gary got into this jazzy impressionistic intro on the keyboards and I of course laid out. Usually, there are times when I drop out on purpose to allow the piano to breath before getting back into rhythm. Anyways, the old man said, “Y’see, that’s a good drummer when he lays out like that and lets the pianist do his thing. You are a musician, not just a drummer”.

Okay, I never had such a nice compliment directed my way like that. Made me feel really good and it was good that we had someone in the audience who appreciated what we were doing. He said he used to play saxophone back in his younger days.

The old man wore an old fedora hat. White, with a black band in the center that wrapped around the entire hat. He was quite a character and I guess for me, he made my night with his compliments about my drumming.

Overall, the gig at The Bistro was awesome. There may not be many people there to cheer us on, but we just have a lot of fun playing the old standards and jazz tunes. And I really love playing brushes nowadays on just hi-hat and snare drum. It was good to be playing at The Bistro again. The people there are very supportive and kind. Chef Kent’s cooking is awesome, although I can’t afford it. Hehe…
