online friendships

May 2nd, 2005

so, i wonder how people manage their links… like, really?

i’m heartbroken because i’ve been going through my list of favorite links and just seeing if we are still mutually linked, and finding out that several people don’t link to me any more…

okay, if you think i’m a bad, evil person, that’s your perogative. but, i guess if there’s no linky love from the other side, then it just means i can make my list smaller here and i don’t have to visit so many sites. :)

of course, people can do whatever they want with their links lists, as i can do whatever i want with mine, so there. ;)

i think it’s important to know who your real online friends are, and sometimes it takes a bit of work to keep friendships online.

for me, it’s a continual learning process. i never claim to have all the answers, and friends may come and go, online as well as in real life. and that’s the way the cookie crumbles i suppose…

but with the few online friends i DO have, i feel closer to them than many of my real life friends and relatives, actually.

hey Carlos, I also interact a lot more with some OL friends over RL family/acquaintences. Got the feeling we’re on the threshold of a “brave new world” where meaningful interaction can follow the spread of information.. i.e., be at one’s fingertips, despite/regardless of limitations :]

You are still on my link list! But my site needs major re-doing…

Carlos, I’ve sort of given up listing all of my daily reads now, there’s just too many of them.

I just subscribe to them all if they have an RSS feed on bloglines.com and leave it at that. I know I should link them in someway, but I got a little “lazy”.

You can see the public list of blogs that I read here: http://www.bloglines.com/blog/willl

Though there are a few blogs I still will visit even if i’m subscribed to them via RSS. (Just not that many anymore).

I have more online acquaintences than I do friends. It is a big network of individuals, most of whom I made contact with via RBJ. I would say RBJ and the contacts made via RBJ are definately great ones. Online friends come and go, and come back sometimes. Some move onto other things in life which mean they spend less time online.

well, what hurts is when you still try to contact people, but they simply ignore you.

that’s usually an obvious, not so subtle hint to move on… :(

it seems to me like its very similar to real life, in that some people may link to be polite (say hi to be polite), but those who link and communicate on a regular basis are more the kind of people in real life that you might be more apt to go to lunch with … that kind of thing … does that make sense?

thanks everyone for the thoughtful comments.

      tyler: i agree.

slurpee: i have seen that, grrl.

will: thanks. i need to subscribe to that some time.

      pat: thanks, man.

steve: ah. yeah, just like me. most of my best pals are online now. in real life i only have family and colleagues.
