i’m going to be on tv…. again

June 1, 2005 by randomguru

The past weekend’s gigs had been tough ones, mainly because they were very demanding and I had to play-out, meaning, I really had to “kick some arse” on the drums.

I had drum solos, played three big band gigs, which are always demanding for drummers, and I did one gig in Camp Pendleton where I totally was lost for 25 minutes!

So, I jammed my left thumb and index finger, into the wall. Yes, it was a clumsy stunt on my part, but it was more-than-likely a result of fatigue.

And I’m still feeling tired over-all because of the weekend’s gigs. My right calf muscle is cramping up on me as I write this journal entry! And I would’ve felt better if I had been doing my Yoga, which I’d been neglecting since prior to the San Francisco trip.

At the Smooth Jazz Festival in downtown San Diego, a well respected percussionist came up to me and said hello, and that he was hearing a lot of good things about my drumming.

I gave him this “aw shucks” type of reaction, and he kept on going about how he’d been hearing about my drumming around town.

That was a nice compliment, I think, coming from one of my peers. Well, I look up to this percussionist, so I was sort of blown away by it.

Anyways, I’m going to be on local TV this coming Friday, and I’m not looking forward to it. I never get to play any drum solos at these things anyways, for some reason.

Give me a drum solo and maybe I’ll feel better about coming down there to play for free!

I just have to be there because one of the singers I work with booked the gig, and I never do any drum solos, but it’s still fun. But these TV sessions take too long. I’ll be down there from 7:30am to about 2pm. That’s a big chunk of the day!

Well, I don’t mean to complain, and on a positive note, I’ve been recording again so I’m just trying to keep the creative thought going….

Hey at least being on TV is some good exposure, no?

Key: It’s not really me who gets any sort of exposure. It’s mainly the lead singer being that it’s his project. I’m just a side musician, and I’ve done many of the local TV appearances.

I guess I’ve made a name locally as a drummer because last Saturday at the San Diego Smooth Jazz Festival that well-known percussionist gave me the compliments. :)

I guess it helps a bit. But I’ve done many of these and it’s not like I get to be featured as a drummer, although I’ve been featured at many gigs doing my drum solos.

well… the bottom line is that it’ll be fun.
any opportunity to play is a good opportunity.
