the tv show

Basically the TV show on NBC San Diego (7/39) went well.
I just had to be there bright and early at around 8am. And this time we had a real stage. It was a home design show and the camera crew started filming around 10am.
It was kind of nerve-racking setting up and checking the sound. We had to make sure we had adequate sound because it was “live”, plus we had to make sure the sound was good going into the TV crew’s sound equipment (the sound that would be coming to people’s TVs at home).
I had to move my drumset about 3 times, because we had to get the right angle and positioning, and allowing for the “home design” banner to show between the keyboardist and myself.
The weather guy said to me, “You look like you’re from the islands”, and I said, “yeah”. I guess he thought I was from Maui or something. I get that sometimes.
When we finally went “Live”, we did about 3 short segments leading in or out of commercials, and our singer was interviewed 3-4 times. He said he was pretty nervous and the chef at the Bistro was teasing him later saying that he looked nervous.
So, it turned out well, but I’ll never see the video feed because I hate watching myself on TV. Let’s just say that the camera automatically adds 10 lbs. to you when you’re on TV. But my wife said I looked good, and I’ll just leave it at that.
Anyways, I didn’t know we had to do a 45 minute show from the “live action” stuff was over with. So, I think we played from 11am to 12 noon.
We got a rather lukewarm reception from the audience, but all-in-all it was a fun gig.
I finally got a chance to do a drum solo during the last song… yes, finally, and this wasn’t caught on “live television” though. But the drum solo felt pretty good. Not one of my best drum solos, but it was adequate enough to get the audience a little excited. But it’s just the context of the particular music I was performing. My best drum solos have come in big band shows.
Well, by the time it was all over I got home around 2:30pm, giving me just a few hours to rest and chill out before heading off to the Bistro gig.
And during the Bistro gig I was all giddy and not serious at all. This usually happens when I’m tired and exhausted. All-in-all, it was a good day for playing drums, though.
And I know, I should thank my lucky stars for having these opportunities to perform. :P
