Serendipity (2001)
February 3rd, 2006My recent DVD purchase was the 2001 Romantic Comedy Serendipity, starring Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack.
One thing to note is that Serendipity was filmed just before 9/11 and the destruction of the World Trade Center towers. The twin towers were digitally removed from skyline shots by the time the movie was released in the theaters.
. . . .
Anyway, this movie doesn’t have the best of reviews by the critics, and it is reminiscent of destiny type Romantic Comedies like “Sleepless in Seattle”. But, I do love the whole concept of “destiny” and discovering clues and signs that can bring two people together, even if they have decided to seperate and see if destiny brings them back together again.
But, I really love this movie! And the whole idea of finding romance in Manhattan!
Incidentally, I don’t remember if my wife and I saw this in the theaters, but we definitely rented the DVD back when it first came out. We went to New York City a couple of years ago, and we didn’t get a chance to go to Bloomingdales (where the two lovers first met while grabbing the last pair of black cashmere gloves on the rack), nor did we get the chance to dine at Serendipity 3 on E. 60th Street on the upper east side! And many of the scenes were filmed at the Waldorf-Astoria.
Now… I really want to go back to NYC to have the famous
Frrrozen Hot Chocolate that Sara and Jonathan had at Serendipity! Any reason to go back to NYC is a good reason, of course….
[ to finish at a later time ]

serendipity is definitly on my top five
of all time favorite movies [the ones
you can watch over and over again]…and
well, sleepless in seattle, too.
both films don’t actually show the two
main characters together until the very
end [and short scenes in the
beginning/middle]. i love that about
the two.

Annie: i didn’t know that about you, but that’s good. you’re right, you just never know what your eating at eateries, and usually the sinfully good stuff is just that, sinful and not very healthy for you.
Jo Anne: yes, i love that about those two movies too. in Serendipity, no real kiss until the very end, and no love/nude scene… thank god. in sleepless they actually never kiss, but there is a certain magic in the way he takes her hand…
