The Five Remembrances
March 22, 2006 by randomguru
I am wholeheartedly trying to understand the essence of the following Buddhist teachings, “the five remembrances”:
- I am of the nature to grow old. I cannot escape growing old.
- I am of the nature to have ill-health. I cannot escape having ill-health.
- I am of the nature to die. There is no way to escape death.
- All that is dear to me and everyone I love are of the nature to change. There is no way to escape being separated from them.
- I inherit the results of my actions in body, speech and mind. My actions are the ground on which I stand.
It’s depressing having to deal with the “reality” of the five remembrances. And I’m finding out, that with a lot of the Buddha’s teachings, they are based very much on “reality”.
The only thing permanent is change…

even though i’m not buddhist. this is so true! and the man teaches things we should i learn and embrace.
it is tough to realize that it’s true but at the same time it makes you appreciate everything you have right now so wonderful. and also makes you excited for the change in your life too. i think so anyway ;)
thank you for your thoughts.
i like what you said, about appreciating everything we have right now and the reality of positive change in this world.
God bless you….
