bbc article on raw foods diet

Raw Food Eaters Thin But Healthy - People who follow a raw food vegetarian diet are light in weight but healthy, according to US researchers.

It has been suggested that eating only plant-derived foods that have not been cooked or processed might make bones thinner and prone to fractures.

But a study in Archives of Internal Medicine found although bones were lighter on this diet, turnover rates were normal with no osteoporosis.

The lower bone mass is down to raw food eaters being slim, believe the authors.

. . . .

I’m still vegan, but I went back to a 100% raw food diet starting this week. I’ve been eating about 75% raw foods anyways, so it would be easy to go 100% “raw” again… after becoming re-inspired by this BBC article. I’ll let you all know how it goes and how I’m feeling…

I’m curious to know how your diet affects your social life in terms of dining (or eating out) with friends and/or family who don’t share the same diet as you .

My family and I have been lacto-ovo vegetarians for about 8 years now. We’ve noticed that we definitely don’t get invited out to dinners as much with friends as we used to (when we still ate meat). Usually it isn’t too hard to make accomodations with the chef depending on the cuisine, but the fact remains that it means we can’t fully “eat” with our friends — different dishes. As I mentioned in my blog, my diet is becoming increasingly vegan. With more dietary restrictions, eating out becomes even more difficult and the opportunities to dine/socialize with friends decreases.

How does your raw, vegan diet affect your dining experience with friends and family? How have you dealt with the challenges it brings? And tips and tricks?

      Hi Janice!

My experiences right now can be difficult. At family get-togethers and parties I usually get critiqued by the one individual who either says “you need meat”, or “aren’t you getting enough protein?”.

then, people have asked me (when they see that i’ve lost weight) if i’m sick, when in fact i’m feeling really great.

well, nowadays most relatives and friends know i’m a vegan. now that i’m focusing on being a raw vegan it makes it even more difficult at social get-togethers… especially if the only thing i can eat at a mostly meat party is fruit or celery sticks and broccoli.

it’s still a process and not an end result. but for the first time in years i think i’ve gotten a handle on me being a strict vegetarian.

when i dine out i usually dine out with my family, who is very understanding about my raw vegan lifestyle. i think they respect what i’m doing and see it as a discipline. so there’s no problems there. right now, the only other times i’m dining out socially is with bandmembers at private parties and wedding receptions. but even then, because our bandleader/singer is also a vegan, there are usually special vegan dinners prepared for the two of us. now that i’m going to be raw vegan that will present a bit of a problem though. but i’ll tell our bandleader so he can have the appropriate dinner for me… raw!

as far as how i feel? i’m feeling great. i have no problems drumming and feel i have even more energy than before. i wished i’d become a raw vegan in the 1990s. but that’s okay.

a few things i have to watch out for is my intake of too many nuts and seeds, and too much raw fruit juices… while healthy, they are still fattening.

anyway, good luck on your progression from vegetarian to vegan. it’s really not as difficult as it seems. and there are more vegans and raw vegans out there for support.

you are awesome carlos. i wish i had the discipline like you! you should carry around snack packs of raw foods in your bag. :)

good idea, annie. i should do that more often… i have these raw vegan bars that i have in the pantry.

but, at this point in time, it’s not so much a discipline… well, it doesn’t really feel like it. just a lifestyle choice now.

but it is a bit of a discipline. which ties in with my drumming performances, and the yoga helps.
