today at la jolla shores beach

June 10th, 2006

My family celebrated my youngest boy’s birthday by having a beach party.

My wife (and I) woke up at 5am and arrived at La Jolla Shores Beach around 5:30am. I’m definitely not a morning person so you can imagine how tired I was, and after performing a gig the night before.

So, there were already people reserving concrete tables and sectioning off parts of the park that faces the beach and ocean. What I like about this beach is that there is a nice stretch of picnic grounds next to the beach, separated by the boardwalk. We were able to get a good spot in the grass with two concrete tables underneath some tall trees for shade.

I jump-started my body by going on a 30 minute jog up and down the beach, watching the many surfers already catching waves so early in the morning. Matter of fact, I was surprised how many people are active this early in the morning.

There were also scuba diving classes. I mean, a LOT of scuba divers preparing their equipment on the grass. And an exodus of divers making their way into the ocean past the surf and slowly disappearing in the distance.

It was nice and sunny for the most part, as we partied until around 3:30pm, though it was pretty windy and cool. The water was cold, but I brought my wetsuit and did some ocean swimming, three separate times during the day. The waves were tame, which made it easy to swim out past the waves and just float along and treading water while I let the gentle movement of the waves carry me.

I met a swimmer out there who swam all the way from La Jolla Cove. He said it takes him 30 minutes to swim from La Jolla Cove to La Jolla Shores. I commended him for his feat and told him that I’d like to be able to do that someday. I think I probably can do it now but it probably would take me a bit longer than 30 minutes. Anyway, the lone swimmer said, “have a good day”, and went back the way him came… back to La Jolla Cove.

Now I’m totally exhausted from running, swimming and all the preparation it takes to have a beach party/picnic. Man it was crowded out there. My parents complained about the crowdedness of La Jolla Shores, and I said, “you know why this place is so crowded? It’s a really great beach.”

Sounds like an awesome day, and a great way to celebrate!

It’s funny to think about how much others have accomplished in their day, before you even have a chance to get out of bed. So many things going on, all the time.

fishlamp: yes, it turned out to be a very nice celebration. it’s been awhile since i did one f those, so it was a lot of work getting all the supplies, food, etc…

i’d like to get out there early and go ocean swimming or boogie boarding, but i’m still a night person. :)

I used to swim for hours every day until I got sick of it! I was on the swimteam in High School and waterpolo too. But, now I am so out of shape I can’t swim that hard anymore, but I could tread water for hours if necessary!!! Ah, the good ol days!!
