How To Create A Site Map For Google

January 18th, 2007

GoogleXML-Sitemaps.com offers a Site Map Generator that will create a Site Map in XML for submission to Google.com. All you have to do is fill out a simple form, entering your URL and a few other variables, and the Site Map Generator does the rest.

The result is an XML file you can cut and paste into notepad, and save as an .xml file.

You’ll need to upload this .xml file via ftp to the main directory of your server or webspace (so that Google can read it).

To allow Google to find and index your site map, you need to:

  • Go to: http://www.google.com/webmasters
  • Click on Webmaster Tools (including Sitemaps)
  • Add your domain: yoursite.com
  • Click on the “Sitemaps” tab
  • Click on the “Add a Sitemap” link
  • Choose type: “Add General Website Map
  • Enter the URL for your sitemap
  • Click the “Add Web Sitemap” button
  • If all goes well then you’ll receive a green check by your Sitemap. Google will definitely let you know if there is a problem, but generally, if the sitemap is valid Google shouldn’t have a problem indexing it.

    And that’s pretty much it!
