a great article by steve jobs on ipod, itunes, drm and the music industry…

ipod_shuffle.JPGThis article (via digg.com) caught my attention regarding the whole DRM (digital rights management) system that iTunes uses to protect its downloadable music. And Steve Jobs gives us his thoughts on the whole deal, especially the fact that the four big music companies had put pressure on Apple to implement a DRM system to protect the music.

“The rub comes from the music Apple sells on its online iTunes Store. Since Apple does not own or control any music itself, it must license the rights to distribute music from others, primarily the “big four” music companies: Universal, Sony BMG, Warner and EMI. These four companies control the distribution of over 70% of the world’s music.”

And I thought Apple was implementing this whole DRM system all along. It’s really the big music companies putting the pressure on Apple. Otherwise, we’d be able to download DRM free music from iTunes.
