Buddy Rich + Drum Set = Amazing Drum Solo!
March 29, 2007 by randomguru
I’ve seen a LOT of Buddy Rich drum solos on the web already, but I came upon this one I hadn’t seen before, and it is simply amazing! I can tell this is definitely his drum solo during his West Side Story arrangement, but I don’t know anything else, except that it was filmed in 1970. If you know, please let me know. Meanwhile, enjoy this drum solo by the greatest drummer that ever lived.
No drummer has ever come close to his speed, nor has duplicated his artistry and musicianship… (I am bowing down to the master, and studying this with earnest)

WOW! Maybe they should add a note to the beginning of the video saying, “No part of this video has been fast forwarded”. As his speed made me doubt my own eyes! Leonard Bernstein is one of my favourite conductors, among Herbert von Karajan, but i had no idea Buddy Rich did the drums in the WSS. WOW oh wow!
And your closing sentence in brackets make me smile. Somehow, I think you have the makings of the next Buddy Rich, since you are so dedicated to your music…:-)) *grin*
WOW!
KC: oh, the West Side Story arrangement is a big band version of songs from West Side Story, and it’s a medley. i don’t think he’s ever performed it with the musical itself, because during that time he was busy touring with his own big band.
but yes, he was amazingly fast. i have a few buddy rich videos that have old footage of him with the Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw big bands. amazing stuff.
thanks for the compliment. before doing all the performances back when i was at disneyland and disney world, i really studied the gene krupa and buddy rich videos that i had. i’m at a place in my drumming where i am happy with my performances, but in order to really play as fast as him i would have to study and study and practice, practice, practice… Buddy Rich claimed to have never practiced. but that is probably because he was always performing! ever since he was young.
This is another great drum solo by Buddy Rich circa l970. Everyone who sees this is amazed. A lot of first time viewers get to see Buddy Rich in Action and this is a great drum solo no exception. But But But But But Buddy Rich did this amazing art every day and every night like clock work. If you like this drum solo you should have seen him every time he got behind a set of drums. Every drum solo and every thing that Buddy did behind a set of drums was the work of a true artist. Every drum solo every arrangement had Buddy in mind. You could put on every record or sound that you hear today and every drummer today sounds like the next guy. They are all carbon copies. Buddy Rich did something that a true genius did he made it so that NO ONE COULD copy his style. Any one who tries to play like Buddy FALLS flat on his FACE because no one could play like Buddy Rich. He was truly ONE OF A KIND. BUDDY RICH was to drums as to What BABE RUTH was to baseball. Simply the greatest drummer who ever played.
My first introduction to Buddy Rich was in 1967 at Bimbo’s nightclub in San Francsico I was 10 yrs old. Yes the master and the King of all drummers yesterday and today. It should be law that any young person should hear and see this remarkable talent. It humbles any drummer want to be.
The simple reason that BUDDY RICH was the most spectacular drummer in history is very easy to state. First BUDDY RICH never had to go to a music school or university to learn the hard way how to play a set of drums like no other human could? Buddy did all his home work playing since he was kid backing guys like Charlie Parker Artie Shaw Stan Getz Dizzy Gillespie and the list goes on and on. Like Buddy said many times its nots sitting in a class room learning how to play drums its going out each and every night and creating and by the way Buddy did that. He paid his dues with small groups big bands you name it. This drum solo just shows how much of a talent he always was. On the spare of a moment he could create drum history. So many drummers out there today and even those who were out there like Krupa and like Max Roach and like Cozy Cole and counteless others. Buddy Rich was in a class all his own. He did imaginitve drum solos that no one could copy. Like the best musicians in the world he left his name and his reputation to be never duplicated. To this Date I have stopped listening to all the OTHERS on a set of drums. That is a total waste of time. For me its just BUDDY RICH. He was simply the BEST. I have no time or patience to listen to any one else. Buddy Rich the name says it all. BUDDY RICH. THE GOD OF DRUMMING.
You kind of get tired of listening to TODAYS Music and Todays Television Shows simply because they sound like an OLD OLD Record that just plays the Same Same Same Same repeats over and over. This is Boring. Buddy Rich got behind a set of drums each and every night and created a masterpiece of percussion history. Never once did I SEE or HEAR Buddy Rich Play the same nonsense that you hear today. Buddy was always his worst critic. Buddy Rich was never content of playing something that would be a WARP or pattern. This is what made BUDDY RICH spectacular. You went to a Buddy Rich Concert or to a night club or a jazz concert and seen the Buddy Rich Big Band it was something to behold. I loved Buddy Rich so much because he did not depend on loud loud amplifiers or special lighting or special funny hats to make him look or sound great. Buddy was Buddy he could and would CREATE the greatest drumming that ever was played. When I listen to drumming I listen to BUDDY RICH. I do not have time or patience to listen to the same same same same old drum patterns and the same old Heavy Rock Metal nonsense that is being played today. Its time to realize that only Buddy Rich could deliver fantastic music be it a Big Band or a Small Group. Buddy Rich was the dominant KING of the Drums. None better out there. Back in the old days Buddy Rich made other drummers take a back seat and that included Gene Krupa and all the others. Today still there is no one out there that can play anything near Buddy Rich. First they do not have the technique or IDEAS that Buddy Rich had. Sure dome drummers are Fast Quick and LOUD and LOUDER. no need for that. I will stick with Buddy Rich as the all time TREMENDOUS Drummer. Greatest Drummer to ever ever ever get behind a set of drums period. By the Way Buddy did not have to play ROCK to be great. Buddy Rich could have played any style of music period. Any Style and he would have made that Style of Music the GREATEST. Buddy Rich the GOD of Drumming.
