weekend recap

May 7th, 2007

Last Thursday was another gig at The Quail in San Marcos… more fun with Cecil, Nate, Valerie and James.

Saturday was Cinco De Mayo, and Grapevine performed at Harrah’s Rincon Casino, after the big Floyd Mayweather, Jr. vs Oscar De La Hoya fight. It was a tough act to follow, but because it was Cinco De Mayo, the dance floor was crowded and lots of people took a break from gambling to watch us. But, once again the smoke-filled Casino wreaked havoc on me and every chance I could get I rushed outside to get some fresh air! My cousin Max was playing keyboards at this gig. This was the first time I’ve ever played at Harrah’s. Very nice, the door to the stage was right at the front making it so easy to load instruments/equipment onto the stage!

On Sunday, I rehearsed with Pleazure. Once again it was great to see everyone, and once again there was lots of food during our break. It’s coming together just fine and nice to rehearse with the full band. Calvin (bass), Ed (guitar) and I ended up having this long chat after rehearsal. And Calvin mentioned that he got some gigs with Susan McCrea (drums). I had subbed for Susan a while back at Tuscany Restaurant when she did some shows in Germany, and she had also booked some gigs for Big Daddy Orchestra as well. It’s just amazing how small the local San Diego music scene is here… like 3 degrees of separation or something.

So now, I’m feel really wiped out from all that second-hand smoke I inhaled at Harrah’s. I love playing all the Indian Casinos around San Diego County, but man, I just have a hard time dealing with all the cigarette smoke!

Okay, more later…
