A Not-So-Great Weekend
May 27th, 2007It started on Friday on my way to the gig to perform with Flamenco Nova, when I got into that car accident that I’m still somewhat traumatized over. I know it’s in the past, I should move on, but psychologically speaking, the accident threw me off for the entire weekend. We did great at Le Papagayo, but I still felt affected by the accident.
Then Saturday came along and the big band did a show down at Dick’s Last Resort as a part of the Jazz Festival. All in all, I was very disappointed with our performance there. We had a big crowd and I felt a bit embarrassed. Mainly, because our regular bass player wasn’t there (he took other gigs that paid more) and somehow we ended up being desperate for a bassist. We ended up with the sound guy who was also a bassist, but seriously, for someone to try and do sound and play bass at the same time, it’s just next to impossible. And, our sound pretty much “sucked” and the bassist made several mistakes throughout the 3 plus hour gig. It was somewhat of a disaster, and so sad that it had to be at some high profile event. I just walked away from the gig feeling very depressed and embarrassed. I’m glad all the people I invited to come down didn’t show, or if they did maybe they didn’t want me to know they were there.
Anyway, I have another performance tonight… a wedding reception. And I just want to put the weekend’s events (thus far) behind me and just try to salvage what’s left and do a great job tonight for the wedding couple and their wedding reception. From here it has to get better.
Then I’ll just spend a quiet relaxing Memorial Day on Monday with family, and forget what happened this weekend.
And so far, no whiplash. *knocks on wood*

I hope this performance will be a much better experience than the last.

Zaya: thank you. the wedding reception in La Jolla was infinitely better. a very appreciative audience, dancers! and our regular bassist was there and the band sounded really great to me. it felt very good!
