Nana Mouskouri

May 30, 2007 by randomguru

I’ve had this longtime appreciation for international singing sensation Nana Mouskouri, though I hadn’t listened to anything she’s recorded in quite a while.

Now I’m reading on her official site that she finishing up a big farewell tour. That’s kind of sad to me, but she’s had such a successful singing career that has gone on for more than 4 decades now.

Her voice is just so beautiful… ethereal. She sings in several languages including English, French, Italian, Greek, Spanish and Portuguese. But I personally love her best when she sings in French.

I found this tribute video on youtube and I love the song (Tu m’oublies)!

From Nana Mouskouri’s Wikipedia page:

Mouskouri currently lives in Switzerland with her second husband, André Chapelle whom she married on January 13, 2003. She still performs about 100 concerts each year. In 2004, her French record company released an unprecedented 34-CD box set of more than 600 of Mouskouri’s mostly French songs.

For 2005 and 2008, she plans a farewell concert tour of Europe, Australia, Asia, South America, the United States, and Canada. During an interview with The Australian newspaper, when asked why this would be her final concert series, Mouskouri said she wanted to retire on a high note. “I never thought that I would grow that old. It is better really to stop while you are standing well on your feet. I just want to be proud and in very good form and thank the audience for all this love,” she said [2].

In 2006 she made a guest appearance at that year’s Eurovision Song Contest which was held, for the first time ever, in her native homeland of Greece. Appearing in front of an estimated television audience of 160 million she congratulated the participants on their performances and started the televoting sequence.

Mouskouri has sold more than 300 million(*) records internationally, recording about 1,500 songs in 15 languages on 450 albums. She has more than 300 gold and platinum albums worldwide.

I bought this CD a long time ago and the first track, “Recuerdos”, is one of the most beautiful, inspiring songs you’ll ever hear. I love the whole album, and the recording quality is superb. If you are an audiophile with a great system you’ll absolutely love this CD! Oh, and the last song is excellent too… L’Amour En Heritage.

Okay, I’ll finish this entry with one of the most beloved of all Nana Mouskouri songs… The Liberty Song (Je chante avec toi liberté), in French. *Sigh* Listening to her music again is just so inspirational. Makes one so glad to be a music lover at heart:
