RBJ: Addressing The Site Problems

January 17th, 2008

I have a confession to make…

I’ve really, really been neglecting the Rice Bowl Journals site lately. And basically I haven’t done much of anything to it so far in 2008. This is pretty lame and pathetic, I know.

But in recent months my heart hasn’t been in it. So, I figured if I could just take a few days off from the project then I would re-energize and get myself back into gear. Well, days turned to weeks and weeks turned to months, etc.

Well, the problem was the webhost’s move to PHP 5 finally, but I must’ve had some pretty radical code that it “blew up” a lot of the PHP scripts. Frustration led to confusion and that in turn led to a loss of inspiration and motivation.

Right now, there are so many problems with the site (behind the scenes and as one surfs the site itself). For example, the registration process is broken. And I’d been debating on whether or not to just start a new one. Also, I want the site to be more accessible somehow to everyone. Everyone should be able to create an account on the site…. if not as a blogger, as a reader of RBJ blogs. So, it seems like a monunental task for me. I had a lot of other stuff going on musically, so I just kept putting RBJ on the backburners.

But take heart RBJ fans and friends. Randomguru will try and get back on the “good foot” and fix all the problems that have plagued RBJ recentlly. In the past, it just seemed that RBJ had been plagued with one problem or another that had kept it from becoming a great community site… then Web 2.0 came along and basically swept everyone off their feet in a virtual online kind of way… and a poor little webmaster like myself just couldn’t keep up with all that.

Hopefully, I will just take all the problems, one step at a time, and try to slowly but surely fix everything, and bring the beloved RBJ site back up to speed! There is so much I would still like to do for the community and to keep it alive and well….

Just wish me luck, okay? And keep those donations coming because all those affiliate programs just aren’t cutting it… or, please visit our sponsors, if you know what I mean.

Thank you,
Randomguru

you definitely don’t owe it to any of us to make RBJ your priority in life, so i’d say don’t let it stress you too much. i can’t even grasp what needs to be done (so not a techie!), but it sounds like it might take a lot of time and energy, which i trust you’ll get access to when it’s the right time for you.

(in the meantime, being on the home page is doing my blog stats a world of good…^___^)

      good luck carlos!

tokyorose: thank you so much. i really appreciate your kind thoughts on the matter. when i start feeling that my hearts in it i’ll definitely re-work the site. which could be pretty soon. :o)

well, i’ll have to showcase another blogger on the front page sooner or later. but you still have a few days left before i get around to changing that. ;o)

Rather Belatedly, but for what it is worth, I would like to echo Tokyo Rose’s sentiments word for word! You definitely don’t owe it to anyone of us, so don’t let it stress you out. I too am not at all technical, or knowledgeable, (I never even got around to learning how to use or even start a Pay pal account, otherwise I could have made that long overdue donation). *sigh!* My husband just handles all the banking stuff, i am quite spoilt that way. LOL!

And definitely, just being on the site or even having that site has really made my blogging world a very warm and happy, and very enriching experience. And for that I am really eternally grateful to you for RBJ.

So really, don’t feel guilty. And PLEASE! take as long as you like. I hope RBJ will be around even when we are all 70+, even if we are no longer blogging. :-))

KC: Thanks so much for your kind words and support. Actually, I made a few fixes to the site. Slowly but surely. :o)

I think I’ve been having virtual chronic fatigue syndrome. ;o)

Carlos, I think that to many of us that the fact the site is up and running is more than enough. Your not alone in putting RBJ on the back burner, that’s for sure. I’m a prime example to join in that category!

Now days, I barely have time to even check RBJ daily and whenever I do, seeing the mod tag next to my user name for the “podcast” really makes me feel guilty since there hasn’t been any updates there for quite a while!

But in truth, the raw RBJ community is strong enough to see the evolution of the site/podcast no matter how long it may take, and that’s what’s great about RBJ.

Also, did the iTunes affiliate help at all?

Jay: thank you for your thoughts. i appreciate that. as far as the iTunes affiliate program… hasn’t really helped at all.
