Violets and Amethyst
January 29th, 2008
I’ve started an eBook of Poetry and Prose by yours truly. And I hope to finish and publishing it online sometime next month in February 2008. This will be my first eBook ever, and why I never thought about publishing my own eBook years ago is totally beyond me.
Well, now that I’m beginning to see just how easy it is to create an eBook and making it available online, I’m sort of jumping on the bandwagon, so to speak. But, I’ve always wanted to publish a book of my own poetry… just never allowed myself the time and effort to do it. And, I’ve never thought of myself as a great poet. But, I love to write, and I love writing poetry and prose… and creating an eBook sounds highly possible and a logical next step for someone who loves to write, so why not do it?
Actually, I’ve been inspired by a number of bloggers and writers out there who are making their dreams a reality. Leo Babauta, for one, of Zen Habits fame; published an eBook entitled, Zen To Done: The Simply Productivity E-Book. He’s created a highly popular and successful blog that features a lot of great advice: from getting organized and simplifying one’s life, to being more productive with one’s time. Being a father of 6 children, he must be a master at juggling his time and energy, so I’ll have to buy his eBook!
But back to my eBook…
I’ve decided to call my eBook, “Violets and Amethyst”, named after a poem I wrote for my wife a long, long time ago. And this eBook will be a collection of poetry and prose I’ve written over the years, along with other writings and reflections on life.
Should I charge a price for the book? Well, Leo of Zen Habits is asking $9.50 for his eBook. If I do, it will be very reasonably priced and less than $9.50. Much of my poetry and prose has already been made available on my blog and other sites I’ve maintained, but the eBook will be a nice compilation of my poetry and prose in a more formal, organized, published format. So, I figure $8.00 isn’t too much to ask for a person’s life of writings. And I’ll include some of my sky photography and such.
I think I will set a goal of trying to finish the eBook and make it available before Valentines Day, being that many of the poems are about Love.
Okay, for my sake I’ve mentioned my project so that I’ll make sure that I follow through. It’s just up to me not to procrastinate and to finish! Wish me luck, I’ll definitely need it.
Here’s a preview… the title poem.
. . . .
Violets and Amethyst
You send me letters,
and I anticipate their coming,
but–
I know not
how to answer them.
Perhaps I will give you
my thanks and appreciation instead
in the form of a poem…
for I love and appreciate
what you put into words.
The beauty that you are–
I represent with Violets.
(A gentle,expressive color that
reminds me of a deeper love.)
The thoughts that you are–
I see in the gem, Amethyst.
(a strong yet beautiful stone
that reminds me of the strength
of friendship.)
Violets and Amethyst…
I can never understand
the hidden meanings,
but I can feel the beauty
of each stroke of the pen,
and,
to my surprise,
those feelings are much more
than what I had expected.
