But, but… Sometimes It’s Best Not To Write Anything!
July 28, 2008 by randomguru
The other day my wife and I went to Whole Foods, and on the way we saw the police arresting this homeless man, who was obviously drunk. It looked like they had just given him a sobriety test just before slapping the handcuffs on him. As he staggered around trying to maintain his balance, I realized that I had given this same homeless man some money before!
Anyway, this whole experience illustrates an important fact… that no matter how well-intentioned you might be in giving homeless people money, you can never know if they are truly going to help themselves by using the money toward food and shelter, or just go down to the local liquor store and buy alcohol and get drunk.
Chances are, they are totally down and out and are in a position of weakness and irrationality, so they would end up using the money for no good. But also, they most likely are homeless because they had a drinking problem or a drug problem, had lost their jobs, their homes, etc…
It’s a sad situation, to be sure, but just giving them money won’t help their situation. Perhaps actually buying them a hot meal and some water would be better, or help them find a homeless shelter.
So, what has all this got to do with the title of this post? Well, nothing really. I was actually thinking about another person’s post where she said that she was somewhat disappointed in the fact that many bloggers are influenced by the possible moneymaking opportunities of blogging. So, their writings are skewed by that fact.
Well, as for me, I don’t make any money here… not enough to make a living. But, it would be so wonderful to write whatever you feel and be popular enough to make a 6 figure salary out of blogging, and being able to tell your spouse to quit his job and be a stay-at-home Dad… like Heather at Dooce.com! There is definitely nothing wrong with that. But, I agree that many bloggers are swayed by the possible dollar signs.
Myself? Well, I wish life were that nice. I enjoy blogging about anything and everything, but I barely make enough to pay the hosting costs and maybe a latte or two at your local Starbucks… in other words, rather pathetic.
