Hello, Good-bye…
September 23, 2008 by randomguru
So, I just finished a nice jog-walk routine around the neighborhood. Lots of hills, so I get a really good workout with lots of varying amounts of resistance training. About 40 minutes, 6-7 times a week. Sometimes I do an easy 30 minutes, sometimes I do a full hour.
Anyway, when I meet fellow walkers/joggers/runners along the way I always say “hello”. Sometimes people tend to ignore me, others say “hello” back.
Today, I said “hello” to the first four people I met and they totally ignored me, not reciprocating. This makes me wonder if I shouldn’t say “hello” anymore. If people in my neighborhood aren’t all that friendly then why should I continue to extend a “hello” out in some sort of friendship… just being neighborly.
Well, the fifth and last person (finally) said “hello” back to me. She was a younger person. The other four were much older females, and seemed on the conservative side, and didn’t appear very friendly to me. All five women were white-caucasian.
I don’t know… is saying “hello” not a cool thing to do? I can understand people (especially women) not wanting to talk to strangers. But, being rejected like that is a drag. I’m just being friendly, but perhaps it can be taken the wrong way. What do you think?

you are not alone, most time people just ignore my hellos, I say it anyway.. check for ipods, if they do have one on I just wave.. old fashioned these days I guess:)deb
Debbie: Thanks for chimin’ in… and the first person who didn’t say hello had her earphones on and listening to an iPod. The next three didn’t. The fifth who said hello was listening to her iPod, and I had my MP3 player as well.
But in all cases I said hello and at the same time waved to them.
And like you, I’ll continue to wave and say hello. I have to be optimistic, yes. :o)
