David Blaine’s ‘Dive of Death’ a Sham?
September 25, 2008 by randomguru
I was able to catch the final moment last night on television. And frankly, I was a bit confused and unimpressed. Perhaps there was a malfunction in this latest stunt? After all, David Blaine is an illusionist and magician, and a person who likes to test the limits of human endurance…
He’s definitely amazed people in the past, but this latest stunt might be considered a total dud. I actually thought he would nose dive straight for the circular platform below and just disappear. I think that’s what everyone assumed. Maybe the lights were supposed to go out just after he leapt off the 40 plus foot platform, and when the lights turned on again he’d disappear? Who knows… but the crowd was either confused or unimpressed as well.
But, hanging upside down for the better part of 60 hours is definitely a feat of endurance. I can do headstands for 5 minutes, maybe 10 minutes at the most before having to convert to right-side-up again. People were not impressed when they noticed David Blaine taking hourly breaks standing upright to urinate and have a drink. But still, I think the average person wouldn’t be able to last half an hour, let alone 60 hours.
Perhaps David Blaine’s ‘Dive of Death’ sham is a symbol of our troubled economic times. Perhaps the real illusionists are the people on Wall Street, making money and investments disappear… or perhaps the real magicians would be the Federal Reserve for suddenly making $700 billion dollars materialize before our eyes? Either way, the saving of the U.S. Economy would be the REAL, ultimate magic trick!
