Signs of Life in 2009…

What is “real”? How do you define “real”?Morpheus

The MatrixI love the original Matrix movie.

Lots of great quotes that can be connected to Christianity AND Buddhism. Words of wisdom that questions what our views of reality are.

For instance, do you view the body and mind as separate? Or as one?

When we have psychosomatic ailments, the mind is definitely a part of the equation. We are what we think we are.

So, one of my “friends” wished me a happy birthday with the added verbage, “old, old man”.

Yeah, nice!

Like, at 51 years of age who’s sensitive about their age?

Jeez, I remember making a big fuss about being 25, and being a quarter century old. Now, the years have passed by so quickly and now I’m more than half-a-century old!

Un. Believe. Able!

But, while we’re on the subject of age. I have one bit of advice. One profound nugget of wisdom to impart to all my readers. And, consider yourself very lucky to have been given this knowledge… this truth…

Are you ready for this?

Words of wisdom….

Don’t act your age!

Because in the scheme of things. People will have a tendency to act like an adult. Or, act like a middle-aged man. Or, because they’ve turned 50 or whatever age they think is old, they think they’re over-the-hill.

Don’t think that!

Sure, we age and we eventually pass on. But, the people I’ve noticed who seem youthful even in their old age, had a youthful attitude and never lost their “inner-child”.

After all (and sorry for sounding New Age-ish) we are “Children of the Universe”, and you have a right to be here and all that Jazz… revel in the here and the now… revel in the moment.

But never lose that “child-like” spirit when you get older…. or else it’ll be curtains! Who says we can’t allow ourselves to be playful as adults?

After all, like the saying goes… “We’re all God’s children”.

Believe it. Breath it. Live it.

Anyway, here is another piece of great wisdom that I truly believe in…

Impeccability is nothing else but the proper use of energy.Don Juan

  • Actually, I'm a 26 year old trapped in a 51 year old man's body! :o) why 26 year old? I don't know. I think that's about how I feel....
  • G: Ahhh... I remember that quote now from Dr. Randy Pausch. such inspiration! "child-like wonder".... so important. I believe that is what the Zen philosophy emphasizes when they say to go back to the "beginner's mind" where everything appears fresh and open.

    Tokyorose: thank you. grrl... i'm a-holdin' on... i'm a-holdin' on... ;o)
  • heyy, happy birthday carlos! hold on to the child in you for as long as you can...

I never understood that movie but I like how you made the connection with the body and mind. Happy Birthday, Carlos! Your entry reminded me of what Randy Pausch said at his lecture, "Never lose the child-like wonder. It's just too important. It's what drives us." :-)
  • Hi Shell, and thank you! :o)

I know what you mean, though. of course we must act maturely under the appropriate circumstances. i'm sure if i act literally like a child in business situations i'd likely to be fired. or made to do timeout in a corner. ;o)

but, it's all a matter of attitude, isn't it? i mean, you can carry on through your day-to-day matters, but still approach everything with the freshness and attitude of a child... living life within the moment and not have any pre-conceived notions or expectations. keep yourself open.

it's just a part of surviving and dealing with the stresses of life. still do what you have to do and not take everything TOO seriously. ;o)
  • I agree with your advice although sometimes I do worry that I'm not acting my age. I'm usually pretty good at acting "maturely" when the situation calls for it such as in academic situations. It gets exhausting though. Hence, I surround myself with people who, to quote you, have "never lost their inner child."

    Happy Birthday, Carlos!
