  • 1. To the left is a photo of a young Angelina Jolie, supposedly one of her first photo shoots as a young actress/model. I just found the photo interesting because (aside from the youth factor) she looks fairly similar to the way she looks now, with her current hairstyle and all.
  • 2. I was planning to start a fast on Ash Wednesday, but realistically, I have a lot of raw foods to consume first so they don’t go to waste. I’m the only one eating raw foods as part of my main diet, so I have to eat them. And, I will focus on raw green smoothies to use up the remaining foods.
  • 3. Last night I was feeling very bloated, tired, and lethargic. Just eating those couple of cooked meals really messed me up. I seriously don’t recommend any raw foodist to suddenly eat a cooked meal. I really didn’t feel well. Which proves just how detrimental cooked foods are to one’s health. It’s just that most people are used to eating a cooked meal. Raw foods provide a more cleaner, nutrition-packed meal with less empty calories.
  • 4. This morning I’ll be doing time in the recording studio. Haha… sounds like I’m doing a prison sentence. But I’m actually playing drums in the recording studio with the jazz-pop trio. Should be fun.
  • 5. Today’s Fat Tuesday and Mardi Gras time! What are my plans? Well, once I get out of the recording studio I’m going to be tired. We’ll see how it goes and if my wife wants to go downtown to the Gaslamp Quarter for Mardi Gras. But usually we don’t do anything special.
  • 6. I’ve slashed prices at my Amazon.com store. Right now I’ve got 50 items (books, music, movies) for sale at: http://amazon.com/shops/randomguru
  • 7. So glad Slumdog Millionaire won 8 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director. Such a great, inspiring movie. And I love the original music from motion picture. Great stuff.

LOL How did AJ's pic get into your Fat Tuesday entry? heehee :-P I pigged out on Fat Tuesday. I had lots of bacon, sausage and meat since I'm supposedly giving up meat on Lent. I miss bacon already. :-(

And yes, I like Slumdog too!
  • re slumdog millionaire: i agree, i enjoyed it a lot. pretty good acting by those kids as well...
  • Hi Jim! No doubt, New Orleans has such a rich history of jazz and especially piano. I wish I grew up to the sounds of New Orleans. Which is something that I discover more and more each day as my study and research actually goes back in time instead of forward (I'm so out-of-touch with the latest hits and songs). I'll have to check out that David Thomas Roberts CD. A lot of the best jazz recordings are sub-par recording quality-wise. But I can appreciate the musicianship despite the recording quality.

Last Thursday I met an old timer who played solo piano before and after our performance. And he had the stride piano thing down, but I'm sure he grew up with the music. For me my music appreciation started with Moon River and Theme from a Summer Place and onward from there. But, I have to listen to those older recordings circa 1950s and prior to really get that essence of jazz and swing.

When I think of Mardi Gras, I always of course think of New Orleans. As a pianist, New Orleans holds a special place in my heart, even though I've never been there. But, just thinking of all of those legends that used to haunt that place, going back to Jellyroll Morton and all the musicians of that day (Louis Armstrong, etc.)... up through the days of stride master James Booker and the fantastic Dr. John (and all those other crazy N'Orleans characters, too) , and into more modern days with some big names like Harry Connick (who's really an unbelievable piano wizard -- taught as a kid by none other than James Booker). So much rich piano & music history there... Even my friend David Thomas Roberts (probably the best composer I've ever studied) spent a lot of time there and put out an album called New Orleans Streets -- which, despite its suboptimal recording quality, remains my favorite piano CD of all time.
