Bridges…
Man has had the capability of creating bridges to traverse and cross substantial barriers, that otherwise, would not have been crossed before.
To me, I find much symbolism in the bridge as the perfect metaphor for obstacles and barriers we face as a civilization.
Bridges connect towns, cities… bridges make it possible for us to get to a destination in a shorter length of time, with less hardship.
I guess you could say that we find the metaphor of the bridge in a lot of what goes on in society as a whole.
A bridge is a structure built to span a valley, road, body of water, or other physical obstacle, for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle.
Some of us choose to build bridges to span racial divides, to connect cultures and people. To educate and assimilate.
In society and in the world, there are those who seek to destroy the very bridges that others have already created to benefit their community, their city, their country… the world.
I think that with this in mind, bridges (whatever form they might take in your life) are essential to survival. Sometimes, though… it’s essential to burn bridges for survival. It might not be necessary in most scenarios, but in a few… burning bridges are also essential in order to start and build new ones.
But the metaphor of the bridge is important to us all. In a world that is networked with so many bridges, I see its importance in today’s need for communication.
Knowledge is a bridge…
