Piano Musings: First Solo Piano Gig of the New Year

If you already read my New Year’s Day post, Happy New Year! Welcome 2013!, you know that I somehow succumbed to the flu. Yes, I thought I considered myself pretty healthy but I did end up getting the flu with just a few days left in 2012.

Hey, it happens to the best of us. At least I think I’m getting better today. Well, I should hope so because I have a solo piano gig later today. It’s a gig that I’m doing for my wife, because her boss is retiring and they’re throwing a special event at a hotel.

I’m still feeling pretty weak, but a little bit better than yesterday. And, I’m already committed to this gig.

Performing while sick is something I’m somewhat used to, as I remember even back when I was 16 or 17 and performing in a dance band when I had the flu. I had a bag next to my drumset just in case I threw up, but luckily, I didn’t.

I just hope I don’t go into a relapse, because I think that’s what happened when I played the New Year’s Eve gig a few days ago. I started feeling sick last Saturday, and I think doing the New Years Eve gig made my flu worse, although it’s always fun performing.

We’ll see what happens tonight, as my powers of concentration might be challenged, or I might become totally absorbed into the music and forget that I have the flu.

I’ll keep everyone posted on how it goes. But, because I am a working musician who doesn’t get paid sick leave, if I don’t work, I don’t eat. It’s as simple as that. So, I have to do a gig even when sick, unless I’m completely bed-ridden and delirious with fever.
