Yoga Musings: Yoga, Meditation and Musical Performance
I have always been a believer in the power of Yoga.
As a matter of fact, I believe it is essential for any musician to practice Yoga in addition to musical practice.
Many people in the entertainment and music business practice Yoga in order to help them stay healthy and to perform at their highest level. People like Madonna, Sting, Natalie Portman, Gwyneth Paltrow and Robert Downey, Jr. have all practiced Yoga in order to help them be their best at what they do.
Yoga prepares the mind, body and spirit for meditation. When you are at your optimal level of health, you will meditate at a higher level as well, and prepare oneself for attaining enlightenment and self-realization.
For the musician, Yoga is like fine tuning oneself to play on his/her musical instrument. And musicians know that you must tune the instrument before you can play it. And thus, it really is the same thing with the musician, who should ideally tune body, mind and spirit to play the instrument!
I’ve recently jumped back into daily Yoga practice, starting off slow by doing Sun Salutations. I’m not naturally flexible, so I really have to work hard at practicing to be flexible. I think all those years of drumming (and not stretching and practicing Yoga regularly) have made my muscles tight and inflexible.
But, I really feel the difference when I keep a regular daily Yoga practice, and then perform music. And, there are many subtleties but I truly believe it helps me perform at a deeper level of expression when playing music.
I still have a ways to go before becoming a true master of Yoga. It is a lifetime commitment and one should really practice Yoga daily to reap the benefits.
Playing music, to me, is meditation, so I believe Yoga and Music go hand-in-hand.
So that is one of my resolutions for 2013; with the goal to practice Yoga daily and at my own pace so that I will be able to do it daily.
