5 Ways to Deal with Suffering from a Buddhist Perspective

Buddhism quickly teaches us that Life is Suffering.

I hate to burst everyone’s bubble, but the fact of the matter is that suffering is just a step away in the form of illness, having to pay taxes, loss of something, and ultimately death. It’s how we deal with it all that will help us get through this life of ours.

The Four Noble Truths comprise the essence of Buddha’s teachings, though they leave much left unexplained. They are:

1. the truth of suffering

2. the truth of the cause of suffering

3. the truth of the end of suffering

4. the truth of the path that leads to the end of suffering

More simply put, suffering exists; it has a cause; it has an end; and it has a cause to bring about its end. The notion of suffering is not intended to convey a negative world view, but rather, a pragmatic perspective that deals with the world as it is, and attempts to rectify it.

Overall, I’m a person who can deal with the problems I face (and I have many, trust me). Sure, I have the capacity for suffering like anybody else, and sometimes in a Zen form of way (and the fact that I have failed many times in my Life so far) I find a way to cope with it.

I like to call times of suffering simply as life’s challenges.

Like, asking myself after all this time why I’m not a millionaire.

Or just basic frustrations when trading on the Stock Market.

Or asking myself why I lost that job when I truly believed I was a hard worker and good at what I do.

If things have always gone your way, then consider yourself fortunate, seriously!

But from my experience, something ‘challenging’ always happens, and it takes a certain amount of tenacity and determination to get past it, and not be affected by it that it hurts you mentally, physically or spiritually in the long run.

Like right now, the Stock Market is down, and someone who isn’t prepared to handle the ups and downs of the Stock Market might go beserk if they don’t know how to handle the stress and the pressure.

Anyway, here are a few tips that I’ve practiced that have helped me through the bad times, the depressing times, the frustrating times, when life has handed you some lemons instead of a bowl full of cherries.

Gaming

Well, I find gaming to be a nice diversion from the challenges of life. And even though it’s not a direct answer to the problems of suffering, it’s a way to release the stress caused by life’s challenges. I think it can be used as an escape from reality, and that’s where I think it can then become a problem. But gaming in moderation can be a way to deal with any personal problems one has in life. So, game on. But, game responsibly.

Music

They say Music makes the world go ’round. And as a musician, I believe that’s true. Music uplifts the soul, and can generate happiness and joy by listening and dancing to Music! If there’s any one thing that the average person can do to deal with the challenges of life, it’s Music that can make one stop and smell the roses. And, listen to all kinds of music. Listen to relaxing Classical Music. Meditate to New Age Music. Personally, I find listening to old music from the past very relaxing. From Baroque to 50s Popular Music, in general it gives me great relaxation and hope to listen to Music. And playing a musical instrument is even better!

Hobbies

Find a hobby! And this is a broad category that can be anything from flying drones to collecting stamps and coins. I don’t know, I just find it relaxing to get involved in something that takes one’s mind off the stresses and challenges of life. There’ll be times when you need to face those challenges head on, but there are times when you need to chillax and gather your thoughts, to find serenity and calm, and getting involved in a hobby can be a lot of fun and be rewarding at the same time.

Yoga & Exercise

Anything physical will help the body handle stress a lot more. When you are physically fit, you mind, body and spirit can become stronger. Exercise releases tension and gets the body in shape. Yoga calms the mind and does an overall positive affect on the human persona. When people get angry they might take a walk to calm down. Walking and hiking are great activities to help one deal with overall stress and challenging situations. There is life in movement.

Meditation

Meditation is really one of the 8 limbs of Yoga. But since many people tend to categorize it as something apart from the physical asanas (postures) of Yoga, they simply treat the two separately. But I believe Meditation and deep breathing exercises are crucial in calming the mind and putting it in a better, more positive place.

I reserved Meditation for last because I think it’s the most important, and the other 4 ways a pre-requisites to help discipline the mind for Meditation.

Meditation is hard, and it takes years to truly master. Some people are more adept to it than others, but anyone can do it if they set aside the time. And it starts with slow, deep breathing. Control the breath. Control the mind. And train the mind to handle external stimuli differently. And not let the mind become a wild horse that falls prey to all sensory perception. Discipline the mind, and all else will follow
