8 Things I’ve Learned Being a Vegan

As a longtime Vegan, there are some key things that I’ve learned about diet and living a Vegan lifestyle:

1. You can get all your protein requirements from the Plant Kingdom.

2. The body breaks down protein into amino acids. And there are 11 essential amino acids that are needed in our diets in order to build protein.

3. The body can created all 22 amino acids essential to build protein, except for the 11 essential amino acids,
which can be found in the plant kingdom.

4. Carbohydrates will spare protein, somehow, so a low-carb diet won’t work with a Vegan diet.

5. You can eat a LOT of carbohydrates on a Vegan diet, to a certain point. The body actually needs carbohydrates for energy and fuel. But getting carbs from whole grains, vegetables, legumes and nuts are very healthy for the body.

6. Even on a Vegan diet, you need to avoid, or limit, your intake of processed and junk foods.

7. I can eat a lot of rice and surprisingly, rice is not fattening and you can eat a lot of it. I like to use different rices to mix it up, like Basmati Rice, Wild Rice and even other grains like Quinoa and Couscous.

8. Using an online tool like Cron-o-meter has helped me make sure I’m getting all my nutrients on a Vegan diet,
and proving that I’m getting enough protein, essential vitamins and minerals. And, a Vegan multivitamin makes it even easier to get all my nutrients in one day.

9. And one more extra thing… A Vegan diet can give you a LOT of energy!

What is Veganism?

“Vegetarians do not eat meat, fish, or poultry. Vegans, in addition to being vegetarian, do not use other animal products and by-products such as eggs, dairy products, honey, leather, fur, silk, wool, cosmetics, and soaps derived from animal products.”VRG.ORG ~ The Vegetarian Resource Group
