A Chamomile Tea, Coffee, and Two Cups of Green Tea

Over the past 3 months, I’ve been keeping a food journal online, and publicly, so that I am held accountable for my dietary actions. During this time I’ve adopted a modified Japanese diet which I’ve dubbed the Zen Diet. And during this time I’ve gotten into the habit of having a cup of coffee in the morning, and at least two cups of green tea during the day. At night I would opt for an herbal tea, preferably Chamomile tea.

There was an article on NPR’s site that said recent studies have pointed to a daily habit of green tea as a preventative for stroke. This of course interested me, as I’ve been struggling with high blood pressure for years now.

People who drank at least 1 cup of coffee or 2 cups of green tea daily had a 32% lower risk of intracerebral hemorrhage, compared to those who rarely drank either beverage. Intracerebral hemorrhage happens when a blood vessel bursts and bleeds inside the brain. About 13% of strokes are due to this condition.

WebMD has published very similar findings, and those who drank coffee and green tea had the highest defense against stroke at 32%.

I’ve been looking for a holy grail for lowering my blood pressure. And the Zen Diet and the habit of drinking coffee and green tea just came at the right time! So, I’m feeling a moment of synchronicity here, as I’ve been doing what the studies suggest these past few months.

My blood pressure was lower this morning (133/92) and much better than 155/110 at the doctor’s office some months ago.

I just need to keep doing what I’m doing.
