Avoiding Foods that Cause Inflammation and Pain

Avoiding Foods that Cause Inflammation and Pain

I hate to say this, but I started the New Year heading to Yoga Class and Tai Chi Class, when I had taken a break from these activities during the Dubai, Nepal and India trips and also during the holidays.

Let me tell you the jet lag (which I think lasted a good two weeks) was debilitating to me. The challenge is to try to get back on your normal schedule, routine and body clock, but you’ve been on the other side of the world for 3 weeks and now you’re back home again. It’s quite hard going back and forth and having to re-adjust everything.

But having said that, recently I’ve been suffering some serious back pain, specifically located in the upper middle back.

The epsom salt baths and the extra-strength Salonpas have helped out quite a bit with easing the pain. But, I think the main culprit was the foods I’ve been eating lately.

Specifically—and this is because I’ve been watching the NFL playoffs—I ate tortilla chips with guacamole and also lots of popcorn lately. And, that’s when the back pain hit.

I also think that falling asleep on the sofa in front of the TV contributed to this too, as I might’ve been sleeping in a weird position.

Other than these couple of things, my dietary regimen is quite strict, being a gluten-free vegan. But I still take in a lot of sugar from my coffees at home (only one teaspoon of raw sugar) and my tall soy mochas from Starbucks. But, I’m transitioning away from Starbucks in a serious way. One, to bring my monthly expenses down, and two, just to avoid sugar!

Having said all this, I’m researching all foods that can cause inflammation and back pain. And at the same time, I’m researching foods that are definitely anti-inflammatory.

For one, I did stop eating gluten-laden foods all of last year, and until now felt pretty awesome. But, I know I need to take it to the next level.
