2012: The Movie (2009)

Tuesday, 17th November 2009

2012-picture3 stars No doubt, the critics (check out Rotten Tomatoes) have already panned this movie, but that is usually the trend when it comes to "disaster movies". All the negative reviews, however, didn't stop me from going to the theater with my wife to check out this movie. My wife had gotten free movie passes for her birthday, and I'd been meaning to see 2012, and so we ended up watching the movie this past Sunday. Read more

Film Review - Capitalism: A Love Story

Thursday, 8th October 2009

capitalism4 stars I've read a few articles and blog posts critiquing Michael Moore's newest documentary film, Capitalism: A Love Story, as many who promote the greatness of Capitalism typically would, but I think they fail to see the point of the movie. Michael Moore was documenting HOW the Capitalist system had failed... primarily the Stock Market crash of September 2008, and the Real Estate predatory sub-prime lending practices that led to hundreds of thousands of foreclosures within the past few years. Michael Moore seems to be telling it like it is, and more as he uncovers details of greed, corruption and deception at the highest corporate and political levels of America. Read more

4 stars I must confess I'm a big, big fan of Woody Allen's films. So, I may be totally biased when it comes to Woody's latest, Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Read more

Flight of the Bumblebee: From the Movie "Shine"

Saturday, 25th October 2008

From the Oscar award-winning true story of piano prodigy David Helfgott, in this scene "Shine" shines the brightest.
This is the scene where concert pianist David Helfgott (played by Geoffrey Rush) makes a bit of a comeback at a local venue. Eccentric and having been released from a mental institution for having had a mental breakdown earlier in his career, he dazzles everyone at the local restaurant/pub and inadvertantly wins them over, and gets the gig. This is one of those harsh realities in the music world. Someone comes in and outdoes the regular musician at the venue, and soon the former replaces the latter.

Caramel (2007)

Thursday, 28th August 2008

caramel4 stars I was recently entranced by a foreign film called, "Caramel"... the story of four lebanese women working in a beauty salon in Beirut, though a story that's been done before, it seems to feel new and refreshing because of the culture and setting. Lebanon is one of those countries I'm not too familiar with. I once performed at a Lebanese wedding reception and the people were wonderful. They wanted some Lebanese music which we never played before, but I am familiar with basic Middle Eastern percussion patterns. We started something akin to a "jam session" and the crowd loved it and just told us to keep playing while everyone on the dance floor gyrated like there was no tomorrow... and I think we played this one thing for the next 45 minutes or so. It was pretty incredible. Anyway, "Caramel" refers to the caramel mixture that is used for waxing, or removing hair, in Lebanese culture. It is symbolic of the bittersweetness of life, and love... the caramel is sweet but used as a waxing product is painful, thus the bittersweetness of the lives of the four Lebanese women, as they struggle between the modern world and their culture and traditions. The Movie Trailer on YouTube This is a wonderful movie and I highly recommend it. It's the first movie I've seen coming from Lebanon, and it was recognized at the Cannes Film Festival, but was sadly ignored at the Oscars. Nadine Labaki, the film's main actor, director and co-writer is wonderful in this movie. An Interview with actor/director/writer Nadine Labaki
