Friday, May 18, 2018: Indexes in Neutral and Mixed, BA, CAT, RTN, SHOP Push Upward

This Morning

DOW +28.71 ~ NASDAQ -9.13 ~ SP500 -3.05 ~ NYSE -24.45

DOW Top Performers: Boeing (BA), Home Depot (HD), Caterpillar (CAT), Microsoft (MSFT)

Dow Laggards: Intel (INTC), JP Morgan (JPM), Chevron (CVX), Dow Dupont (DWDP)

This morning, the major indexes are non-performing. In other words, not much movement, although we are mixed and slightly in the read so far.

Of course, with the recent volatility anything can happen, and we’ve seen the major indexes bounce back later in the day, rather than the usual pattern of performing higher in the mornings and tapering off towards the closing bell.

The Portfolio, This Morning

This Morning’s Leaders: Boeing (BA) +6.67, Caterpillar (CAT) +1.39, Raytheon (RTN) +1.63

This Morning’s Laggards: Steel Dynamics (STLD) -0.49, Bank of America (BAC) -0.19, Intuitive Surgical (ISRG) -1.98

Notable Stocks

Walmart (WMT)

Despite a stellar earnings report that beat analysts predictions, Walmart didn’t push upward as expected. And this has been a problem with retailers in the past. And, one of the reasons I stay away from Target and Walmart, even though I shop at Target all the time.

AT&T (T)

I picked up shares of AT&T recently, as recommended by family, even though Portfolio Grader rates the stock a ‘D’. But, the dividends are great so this will be a HOLD for the long term. I mean, you really can’t beat 5.55% annual dividend yield and the company is one of the biggest in the Telecomm Sector.

FedEx (FDX)

I picked up a bunch of shares of FDX back in late January 2018, just before the so-called market correction hit the stock market. So, this stock is my worst performing position since it is currently at -8.94%, but I’m holding on until the stock bounces and recovers. It’s technical analysis looks good… Bullish, Strong Buy, and given a ‘B’ by Portfolio Grader.

Current Strategies

1. Buy and Hold. Longer positions in blue chip, dividend paying stocks like BA, CAT, RTN, AAPL

2. Cut losses at 2% loss and no higher than a 5% loss.

3. Work on Dividend Capture strategies and following Ex-Dividend dates.

4. Increasing portfolio to 25 plus stocks and/or stock positions.

5. Increase overall dividends.

The Importance of Yoga & Meditation

Contrary to what many might think, Yoga and Meditation play a big role in managing a stock portfolio. Of course, any cardio workouts help to alleviate stress, but Yoga and Meditation will help the mind become resilient and calmer, and help one to exercise patience when trading stocks.
