Getting Slammed by the Gluten Beast

Getting Slammed by the Gluten Beast

At the beginning of 2017, I started going gluten-free, with signs in 2016 that I was developing a gluten-sensitivity.

Sure enough, as the months progressed, I felt so much better as a vegan who was also avoiding gluten. The problem was that now I was avoiding many foods I loved, such as bread.

But for the most part, in 2017 I’ve been avoiding gluten except on rare occasions which I can count on one hand.

Days Off Gluten-Free

  • 1. In our last dinner in Hong Kong, our tour group was given a farewell dinner at a local Chinese restaurant. I was offered these vegan fried rolls that I was told was vegan, but I know that these wrappers are made with wheat flour. I ate them, but one of my fellow travelers warned me about the gluten in them, but I said I would try them just this once. She commented that I was going to be flying back and was worried about any possible intestinal problems I might have. God bless her for looking out for me. Granted, I felt sluggish and sleepy traveling back, which might’ve been the gluten, but no intestinal problems.
  • 2. A couple of weeks ago I tried the Beast Burger at Whole Foods Market, a 100% vegan burger with a Beast Burger patty by Beyond Meat. The Beast Burger was gluten-free, but the hamburger buns weren’t! Maybe I felt some fatigue later, but nothing serious.
  • 3. A week ago I had some sprouted Whole Wheat bread. Two slices. With vegan cheese and vegan mayo. Nothing bad happened but it didn’t contribute or enhance my energy levels as I recall.
  • 4. Earlier today, I wanted to try another Beast Burger from Whole Foods Market. It was for lunch with the family, as we had established #WFMTuesdays (Whole Foods Market Tuesdays) as a way to take our aunt to lunch every week.

    Gluten SLAM!!!!

Yes, it hit me and I ended up taking a long two hour nap and I didn’t wake up refreshed. I felt a bit depressed and lacking clarity and the overall energy that I’m used to experiencing on a vegan diet.

It wasn’t so much the Beast Burger patty itself, but the hamburger buns, which were made with wheat.

Gluten-Free For Good!

Listening to my own body, I now am truly convinced that I need to be 100% Gluten-Free! I can really feel the difference in energy levels and overall wellness. Once I get some gluten in my system I feel the symptoms of gluten sensitivity.

So, a note to myself: This is a lesson learned. Seriously avoid gluten products and foods from here on out. And know that a gluten-free diet truly can enhance well-being and help to achieve optimal performance and wellness!

Gluten sensitivity or intolerance is a condition that causes a person to react after ingesting gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye.

Symptoms vary widely and can include gastrointestinal problems, joint pain, fatigue and depression. —from
