I’m a Jazz Musician by Default

I’m a Jazz Musician by Default

I’m a Jazz Musician

For me improvisation is key

And this means keeping my eyes and ears open

To the aural sensations of the Music

To hear what my fellow Musicians are playing on stage

And to react to what they play

To interact

To answer back

In the ether of space

The Music lives on

Whoever understands me

What I’m playing

They relate to the joy and the sadness

They relate to the pain

They answer back

They reflect and communicate

through the Music

And it comes together

In melody, harmony and rhythm

Jazz is not dead

It is alive and well through improvisation

No one can tell you not to play

No one can tell you you’re not relevant

As long as another Musician understands

What you are going through

Your need to communicate

In the language that is Music

My musical brothers (and sisters) understand this

We are Musicians

We are Jazz Musicians by default
