Monday, June 25, 2018: Trump Threatens with Tariffs, Stock Market Plunges

Plunging Stock Markets

DOW -328.09—-NASDAQ -160.81—-SP500 -37.81—-NYSE -157.97

Portfolio Winners: BGS, RTN, T
Portfolio Losers: SHOP, V, AMZN

Basically, Trump dished out more threats of tariffs, and the stock market responded by plunging into the red as investors triggered a major sell-off.

The good thing that I see, as the stock market plunged today was that this could be buying opportunities.

Other than that, threatening other countries with trade tariffs will only cause riffs in the global economy as countries are interconnected in the 21st Century. And it’s much more complex than slapping trade tariffs on other countries in an effort to make it seemingly fair for the U.S.

As I mentioned before, any trade deficits between China and the U.S. is a natural process. China has the largest and cheaper workforce. And the U.S. and its people are a heavy consumer of goods coming from China. With 1.3 billion people versus 360 million people, you have a natural trade deficit based on the sheer numbers.

So, trade tariffs (in my humble opinion) might not solve the problems.

And the more we go down this road of slapping trade tariffs on countries left and right, the more it will affect the global economy as companies and countries adjust and find solutions to circumvent these trade tariffs.

The bottom line: Hold onto your horses, the road is about to get bumpy!

Today’s Portfolio Winners

Only three stocks made it into the green today within the portfolio.

B&G Foods (BGS)

I just picked up shares of BGS and I’ve been profiting a little so far. I’m trying to further diversify the portfolio by adding some Food Industry stocks.

Raytheon (RTN)

Raytheon has been tumbling ever since that summit between Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump, which I just thought was major grandstanding, and North Korea probably benefited more from this summit than the U.S. did.

Defense stocks in general have been taking a hit lately, so I’m tempted to just sell and take the profits.

AT&T (T)

I haven’t been too happy with the performance of T, but it has a very good dividend, so for now I’m holding for the long term.
