Morning Cup: United We Stand, Divided We Fall
I’m sipping my cup of mocha at the local Starbucks. It’s a gorgeous morning, although a bit on the cool side. As usual in sunny San Diego, we have drought conditions so the air is dry.
I’m busy working on my laptop, checking out the stock market and my portfolio. It’s just been a rough year overall for me. Even though the DOW is hovering near all-time highs again, my portfolio’s been suffering. But, we carry on.
One thing is for sure after this recent presidential election, is that we are one sorry, divided country. We are hopelessly divided. And it’s the way we are divided that troubles me. But I know that there are more moderates and centric-leaning people out there who aren’t as vocal as the extreme right-wing and left-wing groups. These troubled people are the ones who dish out all the negativity on the web.
Here’s what I’ve seen… the extreme right-wing folks lash out rudely and crudely on social media. The left-wing extremists are similar, but not as extreme and nasty. Let’s face it folks, Republicans have been the most ‘evil’ when it comes to their agenda of putting down the liberal left, and even centric candidates like Hillary. They spout out all this rhetoric about Hillary that she’s crooked and corrupt, and her family is pure evil.
We are a divided society because we believe in this ‘us and them’ mentality. It’s prevalent in sports where we root for our favorite team. It’s in our dominant religion of Christianity; of good versus evil. Everything today is divided up into a liberal agenda or a conservative one. There is nothing in-between. It’s either black or white, right or left, forwards or backwards and I think that is a sad situation of our society and times.
Here’s a thought.
Things aren’t always black and white. There are definitely shades of grey.
And I can refer to the concepts of Taoism and Chinese Philosophy, in which our world is a duality. There is night and day, the moon and the sun, hard and soft, low and high… this is much of how nature works, but with the ideals of a nation, when the country is divided like it is now, we are not so united, and we fall to the possibilities of outside forces, like the recent fact that Chinese companies are buying up American properties and businesses like it’s nobody’s business.
So, we as a nation have to find some common ground. We have to stand united or else we will fail.
How we do it? I don’t know… but we have to generate more positivity in our world.
I sincerely hope we can do that. It’s simply in our nation’s best interests that we do.
