Saturday, August 4, 2018: Recapping the Week in Stocks

Apple Wins!

DOW +136.42—-NASDAQ +9.33—-SP500 +13.13—-NYSE +55.27

Portfolio Winners: T, FB, V
Portfolio Losers: IQ, SHOP, AMZN

No doubt, the stock market is reeling over Apple’s emergence as the first $1 trillion company in U.S. stock market history! On Friday, Apple dropped below $1 trillion dollar market cap, only to regain its trillion dollar status later in the day.

I’m invested in 3 current positions of AAPL, all doing well. Warren Buffett has been stockpiling shares of Apple and he has millions of shares of AAPL now, last I heard it was 240 million shares of Apple stock. And that means he pretty much owns 5% of the company.

Let’s go over the week’s losers. AMZN descended from its lofty perch as the stock sank a bit after posting stellar earnings which boosted the stock to all-time highs.

IQ is the Chinese equivalent to Netflix, but because of the trade wars between the U.S. and China (initiated by Donald Trump himself), most Chinese stocks this past week floundered.

Shopify (SHOP) was a big surprised, since the stock did poorly toward the week’s end, even after posting better-than-expected earnings results. Perhaps the sell-off was the result of investors taking in profits and chasing out.

Going over the winners, AT&T (T) was a bit of a surprise, ending the week on a positive note. The stock is still showing some bearish technicals, but it’s a Widows and Orphans stock, so the +6% dividend is quite good, so I’m simply holding for the long run to get the dividends, that’s all.

Facebook (FB) suffering the worst drop in stock market history, but is slowing rebounding and finished on a more positive note by Friday. I’ve been buying and selling FB for many years to capture quick profits, but this recent purchase just before the downturn has set the portfolio back a few percentage points.

Visa (V) is a good performing stock which is on my Best Uptrends list, and I will post the top 10 on that list. These are stocks that have very good performances in the past 6 months with steady uptrends, and little volatility.
