Solo Piano Tonight @ Le Papagayo

Piano Reflection...It’s October 1st and I’m fortunate to find myself in the rotation at my favorite place to play, Le Papagayo restaurant in Leucadia! I’m pretty excited. And the owner said that he’d get me in to do solo piano in the event of a last minute cancellation.

So, what to play tonight?

Well, I am going to do the usual standards from the Great American Songbook, of course:

Bye Bye Blackbird
Autumn Leaves
Fly Me To The Moon
The Shadow of your Smile
The Way You Look Tonight
The Nearness of You
I’ll Be Seeing You
The Girl from Ipanema
But Not For Me
The Days of Wine and Roses
Love Is A Many Splendored Thing
When I Fall In Love
The Second Time Around

And maybe a few pop tunes:

In My Life
Can’t Buy Me Love

I’d been working on a light jazz version of the 80’s song by Tears for Fears – “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”. Actually, I heard a jazz group play it on the local jazz station. So, I’m doing my own solo piano version of it.

And, I’m planning to take one of the standards and just doing a very long improvised version of it… maybe Autumn Leaves. And, try to go for at least half an hour on the one song.

And maybe I’ll try Chick Corea’s “Spain” tonight, who knows…

I don’t know if this is really a crowd for musicals, but I’ll try to throw in a couple of songs from favorite musicals. I’ll try “My Favorite Things” first. Then “It Might As Well Be Spring” from State Fair. And “On The Street Where You Live” from My Fair Lady.

Of course, there always Blues in C, if I can’t think of anything else at the time…
