Why the Standard American Diet Simply Isn’t Sustainable

Why the Standard American Diet Simply Isn’t Sustainable

Using Cron-o-meter, I tracked what could be a typical day eating a Standard American Diet. The SAD diet emphasizes lots of red meat and other animal meats as a protein source.

And the Standard American Diet relies on fast food restaurants as a quick meal for busy Americans, whether for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

But in this case, for dinner I added a Standard American Diet staple for dining out: Steak, maybe some greens, and mashed potatoes, and throw in at least one beer or a glass of wine. In this case I chose wine to be a little healthier.

Here’s what I found out on Cron-o-meter.

Cron-o-meter Statistics

The Meals

The Day’s Protein

As you can see, a typical Standard American Diet emphasizes lots of protein, but it’s much too much for any normal human being, unless maybe you’re an Olympic athlete? Even then it seems way too much.

Way Too Much Fat!

As you can see, a SAD diet has way too much fat, so all that excess fat and protein ends up being fat on your body unless you’re an elite athlete.

Vitamins and Minerals?

You’d think with all that meat, you’re at least getting the required vitamins and minerals, right? Nope. No Sireee Bob.

You’d have to eat more food in order to get more of those precious nutrients, but then you’d already be maxed out with the protein and fat… get the picture? This diet in the long run simply isn’t sustainable, healthwise.

A dietary supplement like a good multivitamin will do the trick in getting those vitamins and minerals up to 100%, and that goes for any vegan, meat eater or omnivore diet. Still, those Fats and Protein stats look scary!

The Standard American Diet

The Western pattern diet, also called Western dietary pattern, the Standard American Diet, or the meat-sweet diet, is a dietary pattern characterized by higher intakes of red and processed meat, butter, high-fat dairy products, eggs, refined grains, white potatoes, and high-sugar drinks. It is contrasted with a healthy diet found in the same populations, which has higher levels of fruits, vegetables, whole-grain foods, poultry and fish. —https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_pattern_diet
