My Vegan Ways and Falling from Grace a Few Times




I think I’ve mentioned a number of times that I wasn’t vegan for the better part of 20 years. Although I did start following a vegan diet about 20 years ago.

There were a number of factors involved in my falling off the bandwagon a few times. Some were social. Some were psychological. And some were just plain cravings.

I was a serious raw vegan for about 3 to 4 years, but I realized that I have to have some cooked foods. But I DO understand the importance of fresh, organic raw fruits and vegetables in the diet.

At this point, the percentages of raw food vs. cooked vegan food aren’t set in stone right now. But I DO drink a raw cacao smoothie everything which provides at least half of the nutrients and protein in that first meal alone.
That smoothie is around 446 calories.

Now, wikipedia calls a raw food diet anything from mostly raw foods to 100% raw, so I think the distinctions are personal. Some raw foodists also eat raw fish like sashimi. I did go through a phase where I was experimenting with raw sushi and vegetable sushi rolls that were also raw.

I can safely say that more than 50% of my daily intake of vegan food is raw and organic. But, I know I could boost my intake of raw foods. It’s a goal of mine this year, but I’m also trying to be gluten-free as well. So the gluten-free effort could lead to a more raw foods diet.

But looking back at some archives from 2013, I could see that I actually fell off the vegan bandwagon and ate chicken and seafood! I was once again experimenting with a Zen Diet and allowing small pieces of seafood and chicken. I don’t think this lasted more than a few months and I ended up going back to being a vegan again.

So, starting around 1995 with going vegan for the first time, I’d say that roughly most of this time period going back to that time, I was mostly vegan or raw vegan for about 15 years of that time.

Cron-o-meter has helped me stay vegan, mainly because it helps me to know exactly what’s going into my body and that I’m getting adequate amounts of proteins, amino acids and nutrients.
