Yoga Encompasses More Than Just Physical Postures

This morning I did a very nice yoga routine at home, combined what I’ve been doing in Yoga class with my usual routines at home. i’ve learned that my home practice is very much based on a foundation of Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations) and is more of a Power Yoga routine than the classes I take at the YMCA. So, my home practice is a bit faster pace.

I’d like to start doing the Ashtanga Levels starting with the Primary Series. There is a big, big jump going from Primary to Secondary, and I can do almost all of the poses in the Primary Series.

Well, the thing about Yoga is that the physical postures are just one part of an eight spoked wheel. The physical postures alone do not comprise the entirety of Yoga.

The Eight Limbs of Yoga

  • 1. Yama – moral and ethical practices. (doing good unto others, kindness, developing a moral compass, etc.)
  • 2. Niyama – personal observances and practices (i.e. studying holy scriptures, observing Sabbath Day)
  • 3. Asana – the physical postures.
  • 4. Pranayama – breath control (Asana focuses on breath too, but this is considered a separate practice).
  • 5. Pratyahara – control of the senses, and not being led by the temptation of sensory phenomena.
  • 6. Dharana – focused concentration on single point (I consider passionate work like performing music to be Dharana).
  • 7. Dhyana – the act of meditation.
  • 8. Samadhi – attaining oneness or achieving an enlightened state of consciousness.

So, when I mention a Yoga practice or routine, it might pertain to the 3rd limb, Asana.

But, in reality, I’ve been practicing Yoga all along, as Yoga is comprised of more than just the physical postures.

It’s important to clarify this…
