Zen Meals: A Concept of Simplicity and Mindfulness

“The present moment is filled with joy and happiness. If you are attentive, you will see it.”
Thich Nhat Hanh

. . . .

There is truth to the above saying…

If any joy and happiness can be found, it can be found within the present moment.

That said, I have no time for negativity or thoughtless people, so I push on and focus on the task at hand. And, my focus of joy and happiness can be found within my attempts to create “Zen Meals”, if you will.

I’d been very inspired by shokunin Jiro Ono and the documentary ‘Jiro Dreams of Sushi’. There is a Zen to the art of making sushi, a very in-the-moment act of creating something sublime as Nigiri Sushi, as it is created with the hands at the very moment. And, even though much preparation and years of training have led to those moments of clarity, within the moment there is something sublime. And, the sushi master does the same thing every day with the intention of continually perfecting his craft. And at 85-86 years of age he is still in that process of improving on what he has already accomplished.

The whole concept of creating perfect little Zen Meals intrigues me. I realize it is an ongoing process, and my goal too is to improve, but also to find beauty in presentations of food that reflect simplicity and mindfulness. And in the process I hope to improve my being; body, mind and soul. Achieving enlightenment through the act of eating foods that provide nutrition and sustenance.

A quote from the documentary sticks with me, and I’m not sure if it is by Jiro Ono or by the one food critic who praises his work. Needless to say, it reflects his work and his skill at what he does.

“Ultimate simplicity leads to purity.”
