Being A Working Musician In The Covid Era

I think, for the most part, I’m fortunate to be a solo pianist and one man jazz trio, simply because it’s good for my clients and audience.

For one, I’m always masked as a solo performer, and I am happy to follow whatever covid protocols are necessary to ensure my clients and audience are safe.

Typically, I’m distanced at least 10 to 15 feet apart from the audience, and since I don’t sing, it also provides a safer performance, since covid guidelines have suggested that singers pose more of a risk just by the nature of their singing.

And I seem to be getting more work as a solo performer, anyway, so it’s a win-win situation for me.

Especially at Retirement Communities, I’m sensitive to the safety concerns. I’ve been vaccinated twice with the Pfizer vaccine, and I got my booster shot last month. And, my family and I are still practicing rather strict covid protocols at home. And most of our shopping is done by delivery.

I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a joyous New Year. Let’s hope we can put all this pandemic stuff behind us, moving on into 2022.

Third Coast Jazz and Rebecca Jade

Recently performed a Wedding Rehearsal / Reception at Vintana with Third Coast Jazz, featuring Rebecca Jade on vocals. Rebecca is one of the top working vocalists in San Diego County, and frequently tours with Sheila E. We also had Trumpeter and Crooner Jason Hannah, along with our fearless leader and guitarist Jon Walters, bassist Jason Littlefield and Saxophonist Jim Weiss who took this photo.

Side by Side

“Oh, we ain’t got a barrel of money
Maybe we’re ragged and funny
But we’ll travel along, singin’ a song
Side by side…”
—Harry M. Woods (1927)
